Ian Schneider

Ian Schneider began his studies at ISU, where he graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering in the spring of 2000. He entered the graduate program at North Carolina State in the Chemical Engineering Department and earned an MS in 2002 and a PhD in 2005. In October 2005 he moved to the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, CA as a postdoctoral research associate. In 2006 he was named a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation fellow and remained at TSRI until joining the chemical and biological engineering faculty as an assistant professor in January 2009.

Schneider’s research is aimed at understanding how physiological or pathological states in whole organisms are driven by cellular processes. In particular he is interested in mechanobiology and specifically how extracellular matrix cues regulate directed cell migration. One current project includes understanding how different cells integrate multiple directional cues and make migrational decisions. He leverages unique approaches developed in his lab to control structure and mechanical properties of the surrounding extracellular matrix as well as gene editing to understand the role of cytoskeletal regulatory proteins in controlling this decision making. This interest in mechanobiology has led him to begin developing force-sensitive and logic gated drug release constructs built with DNA origami.
